Successful Laboratory Design: Grass Roots, Renovation, or Relocation

Coming Fall 2025

This course focuses on the codes, systems, and layouts involved in designing or renovating a research laboratory. It assumes the participant will be involved at the interface with the design firm. It is intended to give a brief working knowledge of the issues so that the personnel involved can ask more intelligent questions, evaluate competing designs and develop a design suited to the organization’s needs.



During this course, you will:

  • Gain a working knowledge of laboratory design, safety issues, use requirements, and applicable codes and regulations
  • Examine the advantages and disadvantages of different types of casework, flooring, and wall coverings
  • Address how layout, utility systems, and safety systems impact the overall design
  • Learn how to design and organize your laboratory to meet use and safety requirements while never sacrificing efficiency
  • Explore methods to evaluate laboratory design, including electrical systems, workstations, and hoods
