Area Electrical Classification for Pilot Plants and Laboratories

Coming Spring 2025

7 hours

This course focuses on problems encountered in trying to apply the National Electric Code® in a research environment. The course assumes some familiarity with the code although a brief refresher is provided. It is intended for both new personnel to acquaint them with the issues and for experienced personnel to suggest some potential solutions.

 During this course, you will:

  • Review the basics of area electrical classification and the related codes
  • Examine the classification issues that arise when working with hoods, benches, and ventilated enclosures
  • Understand how to adapt existing guidelines to your pilot plant and research labs when they are not directly addressed in the code itself
  • Learn just how much ventilation is required for your installation
  • Address combustible gas detection and how it affects area electrical classification

Instructor: Richard Palluzi
